Building With Solid Leaders Since 1960

Dick Bulkeley has 50 years of experience in the construction industry. “I worked in construction during high school and college, and I knew I wanted to be an engineer,” he recalled. After graduating from Vanderbilt University, he worked in Chicago for nine years. When he came to Oakview in 1969, he brought both national and international experience.

“When I got there, Oakview specialized in small industrial construction,” Bulkeley said. He was instrumental in expanding the company’s focus to include commercial construction, which brought in new clients and accelerated Oakview’s growth. In 1986, Bulkeley purchased the company. Six years later, he challenged ten key employees to double Oakview’s equity within five years. Inspired by Bulkeley’s energetic leadership, they surpassed that goal in only three years.

Bulkeley’s leadership extends beyond Oakview. He is known for his fundraising achievements in the community of Red Oak and has received the Spirit of Red Oak Award for his efforts. In 2004 the Master Builders of Iowa presented him with their “Build Iowa Award.” That same year, he received the Lifetime Directorship Award for 12 years of service on the National Board of the National Associated General Contractors.

Physical fitness has been a lifelong passion for Bulkeley. “I’m into athletics—my wife and I both are,” he said. “I do competitive water skiing and snow skiing. We play tennis. We have a summer home in Beaver Lake, which is just south of Plattsmouth, Nebraska. We have a couple of places in Aspen, Colorado, and we spend a lot of the winter and summer there now. I’ve always felt that physical fitness was necessary for both business and pleasure.”
